Secure Copy™ - Frequently Asked Questions
What Operating Systems are supported?
- Secure Copy supports NT 4.0 (with Service Pack 6a), Windows 2000/2003/2008 Server for source and/or destination servers.
Does Secure Copy require a software agent?
- No. Secure Copy only needs to be installed onto one of the source or destination servers. For maximum performance we recommend that Secure Copy is installed on the destination server.
Secure Copy has "Administrator Override" – What is that?
- Secure Copy's Administrator Override feature allows Secure Copy to access all files, even those that the Administrator does not have permissions to, ensuring a complete copy of all files selected. Secure Copy does not do anything that the Administrator running Secure Copy does not have permission to do manually. To overcome "Access Denied" errors the Administrator usually has to take ownership on the problem file(s) before copying the file. Secure Copy eliminates this process, removing the need for manual intervention.
Besides files and folders, what else does Secure Copy migrate?
- Secure Copy migrates all related NTFS permissions, Shares and Share permissions, File Attributes, Compression Attributes, as well as Users and Groups local to the source server.
How is Secure Copy Licensed?
- This product is licensed on a "named server" basis. A separate license must be acquired
for each computer, whether it will be a source or destination. The license may not be moved to another source or destination computer.
Example 1:
I am replacing 1 old file server with 1 new one using Secure Copy to copy the data. This requires 2 licenses.
Example 2:
I am consolidating 10 old file servers onto 1 new NAS server using Secure Copy to copy the data. This requires 11 licenses.
Example 3:
I run a weekly incremental copy from a file server at a remote site into my headquarters file server using Secure Copy. This requires 2 licenses – one for the destination and one for the source.
Additional Information: It does not matter how many CPUs or NICs are in those servers – only the number of server computers are counted. For NAS and SAN systems, it is only the number of servers that is counted – not the number of storage nodes or disk arrays.
In clustered file servers, data is usually only copied onto one server in the cluster, so only one destination license is required, in addition to the licenses for the sources.
