Service Pack 2 for Windows XP was released on August 6, 2004

This 'service pack' is unlike any of its predecessors and it's much more than what a service pack should be. At nearly half of the size of the entire Windows XP Operating System itself, XP SP2 promises tighter security -- but as we all know, there is constant battle between better security and ease of use.

While SP2 provides a number of very positive changes and upgrades to XP, the changes to the firewall could cause a serious ripple affect among IT organizations that will rival Y2K. This is mainly due to the fact that upon installing SP2, the Windows Firewall gets enabled (you have no choice). The firewall, by default, blocks all remote access to the computer. That means no access to administrative shares; no remote registry access; no access to remote control and management clients. If you install SP2 without proper planning and preparation -- you may just have inadvertently tasked yourself with a visit to each and every client on your network.

Now for the good news: ScriptLogic Corporation has been working hard to ensure proper compatibility between our desktop products and XP SP2. We began our testing early in the development cycle of SP2 and started to build in support to both ScriptLogic and Desktop Authority version 5.51. Full support for SP2 became available with version 5.60. For more detailed information, refer to ScriptLogic knowledge base article 1302.

As ready as we are, we must recommend you test XP SP2 in a controlled environment. Make sure your critical network applications continue to function. Test SP2 before deploying to production systems, then deploy SP2 in a controlled manor -- one department at a time.
